Curriculum vitae
THOMAS F. HECK
President, Insights Consulting
E-mail: insights@aya.yale.edu
My consulting expertise is principally in the field of library and archives administration: planning, prioritization, preservation, and retrieval, with special emphasis on the appropriate use of scanning and digitization to improve access to special collections of various kinds, both private and public. Through the web site of my firm, Insights Consulting, I also represent the offerings of clients who wish to sell private collections.
As an independent scholar, I continue to lecture and to write on a variety of subjects. On a selective basis I also assist individuals and firms with editing and preparing texts for either print or electronic publication. Some of my Web sites for nonprofits interested in creating an appropriate Web presence are found at the PROJECTS page of my Web site.
Librarianship within higher education was my principal occupation during 22 wonderful years at The Ohio State University. I resigned this position in September 2000 in order to complete a large book, and to have more time for research, writing, consulting, and editing.
During my years of regular employment, I managed all aspects of a large (140,000+ volume) department library within a University Library system that comprised nearly 5 million items. It was part of the renowned OhioLINK library consortium. We had a fully integrated on-line catalog and numerous full-text and research databases, all of which were reached using Web-based, networked public access computers. The Music & Dance Library was the most media-intensive of all library locations at OSU, having its own A-V center. An in-house cataloging department complemented its two public service areas.
During the last ten years of my term of library service, I also held a part-time professorship in the musicology area of the School of Music at OSU. I regularly taught the graduate course in Research Methods and Bibliography in Music. I was sometimes involved in thesis guidance, and participated fully on many occasions as a committee member in the graduate examination process.
GRANTS AND AWARDS:

Participant in the December 2001 "School for Scanning," a three-day workshop on the latest developments in scanning and digitization in theory and practice, organized by the Northeast Document Conservation Center. Its purpose was to enable managers and planners of digitization projects to make the best choices in today's technological environment.
