EDUCATION: ADMINISTRATIVE AND TEACHING EXPERIENCE:


GRANTS AND AWARDS:

Fellow, Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS), 1994-95, while on professional leave from OSU.

  • Conducted research on theatre and music iconography;  began writing and editing Picturing Performance: The Iconography of the Performing Arts in Concept and Practice. It was published in latter 1999 by the University of Rochester Press.
USIA Faculty Exchange Fellow to the University of Genoa, June 1990.
  • Did research on the musical iconography of a group of 17th-c. Genoese frescoes.
Fulbright Fellowship to Italy, 1985-86.
  • Resided in Florence; did research on the iconography and literature of the Italian comedy.  This led to the publication of Commedia dell'arte: a guide to the primary and secondary literature (New York: Garland, 1988), and most recently to The Commedia dell'Arte in Naples ... (see bibliography).
Fulbright Fellowship to Austria, 1968-69.
  • Resided in Vienna; conducted dissertation research on the history of the classic guitar within the environment of Viennese classicism.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES:

Participant in the December 2001 "School for Scanning," a three-day workshop on the latest developments in scanning and digitization in theory and practice, organized by the Northeast Document Conservation Center. Its purpose was to enable managers and planners of digitization projects to make the best choices in today's technological environment.

Guest faculty for the eleventh Aston Magna Academy in Music and the Humanities (Rutgers University, June 1993), on the topic "Schubert's World: Viennese Culture in the Reign of Francis I (1792-1835)." My topic was "Schubert Lieder with Guitar: A Reassessment."  A reformulation of this article for a cross-disciplinary monograph on forensic methodology has recently been published (Northwestern Univ. Press, 2002) as "Schubert Lieder with Guitar: Musicological Evidence and Inference."

General Editor (1992-95) of the College Music Society's CMS Reports, a monographic series published occasionally by the Society.

  • VI Seminario di Iconografia Musicale in Urbino (July1991), where I gave a paper (in Italian) on the "Musical Iconography of Genoa's Spinola Palace Frescoes."
  • The Istituto di Studi sulla Ricerca e Documentazione Scientifica, a branch of Italy's Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Rome, March 1992)where I spoke (in Italian) on new trends in library user education in the United States
  • The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (Nov. 1994), to update a group of Central- and Eastern-European scholars on "Electronic Retrieval of Information from Very Large Bibliographic Databases."
  • The University of Aveiro, Portugal, for a presentation (in French) on iconography and iconology (May 1996)
  • Northern Territories University, Darwin, Australia, for a series of five lectures in July 1997, including two with the title "Guitar: History of an Idea." These were part of the Darwin International Guitar Festival, where I was the featured lecturer.
  • Louisiana State University (Feb. 1997 and Feb. 1998), for lectures on the Commedia dell'arte and on the History of Music Printing, respectively.
  • The Festival Internazionale di Chitarra 'Mauro Giuliani' (Bisceglie, July 2000), for lectures (in Italian) on Mauro Giuliani and on the history of the guitar.
  • The University of Miami (Dec. 2001) for a lecture on the history of the guitar.


FOREIGN LANGUAGES:

FRENCH:    Nearly bilingual in spoken and written French.

  • Acquired through study and immersion in French secondary schools in Paris, 1957-61. My father was a Foreign Service officer at the time.
ITALIAN:   Very fluent conversation;  I regularly correspond and lecture in Italian.
  • Italian proficiency gained while on Fulbright in Italy, and refreshed with periodic visits to Italy.
GERMAN:   Read and understand well;  speak and write fairly well.
  • German proficiency gained while on Fulbright in Austria.
DUTCH:    Read and understand fairly well; speak and write slowly.
  • Dutch proficiency acquired in Netherlands, on NIAS Fellowship.
SPANISH:   Read and understand well;  speak and write adequately.
  • Spanish proficiency acquired in Mexico doing student volunteer work, summer 1966; refreshed with an advanced conversation course in 2003.
